Bringing psychotherapy services closer to the people

Ububele Educational and Psychotherapy Trust launched a new project with the aim of bringing psychotherapy services to the community of Alexandra.

The NPO has introduced the Ubulele Ubuntu Bus which is a unique mobile child therapy unit that goes into parts of Alexandra where residents have difficulty accessing psychological support.

It will provide psychotherapeutic and psycho-educational interventions to children, infants and adults in need of support and guidance.

Tony Hamburger, executive director of the trust, said he was excited about this new initiative and hoped that it would have a huge impact on the community of Alexandra.

“In the bus there will be group work, children’s groups and parent groups talking about the sort of difficulties they might be having with their children, sharing financial difficulties, and helping children with their homework,” said Hamburger.

Other programmes provided by the mobile unit will be drama therapy groups for foundation phase pupils, individual drama therapy sessions for parents, parent-infant psychotherapy, parenting classes, support for caregivers working with orphans and young children, emotional literacy groups for young children, and a drama club for senior primary pupils.

Ububele’s overall mission is to have a positive impact on the mental health of disadvantaged children through the development and dissemination of training programmes which focus on early childhood and experiential group work.
