Samwu reportedly threatens to let Gauteng’s taps run dry

JOBURG - It was reported that on 17 August SA Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) served Rand Water with a 48-hour notice to embark on a strike.

The “industrial action” results from a dispute in wages as whereas Samwu reportedly demanded a 10 percent increase for lowest paid workers, Rand Water offered a six percent increase.

It was reported that Samwu’s spokesman Papikie Mohale said when Gauteng’s taps run dry, the communities should confront Rand Water’s board.

Justice Mohale, Rand Water’s media relations manager, told Timeslive there was an agreement with the union that, in the event of a strike, essential service staff would still report for duty.

He said employees who worked in purification, water pump and scientific divisions would not down tools.

This is a developing story. Updates to follow.
