School struggles with parking

ALEXANDRA - Teachers and other officials at a local school are struggling with parking space which in turn impacts on the continuity of their work.

Teachers and other staff at Zenzeleni Primary School are struggling with parking space at the school, which impacts on the continuity of their work.

A teacher at the school who requested anonymity, said it was a problem for fellow teachers, other school officials, and visitors to the school. “Only a few cars can park inside, and those who come first are blocked in by other vehicles making it impossible to get out without disturbing others who may be attending class,” he said.

“This interrupts teaching, learning and meetings. By the end of the year, it may have a significant impact on teachers’ delivery of learning and quality of education to the pupils.”

The school’s grounds are taken up mostly by buildings which accommodate 1 200 pupils. This has left very little space for parking on the premises.

He added that parking outside was risky as cars were damaged or could be stolen. “Recently a car belonging to a member of one congregation which uses the school facilities for weekend church services was stolen when parked outside,” he said.

A social activist, Thabo Mopasi said that Alex needed more schools for the ever-increasing number of school going children. He added that authorities have to be innovative in dealing with the problem of space in the township, and should consider bussing pupils to other schools outside of Alex.
