The Department of Energy announced that all grades of petrol would drop by 51 cents a litre while diesel would drop by 75 cents.
The department attributed the petrol price drop to the weakening Rand against the Dollar, as the weakening Rand decreased the contribution to the Basic Fuels Price on petrol, diesel and illuminating paraffin.
One week ago the Automobile Association of South Africa predicted that the petrol price would drop by over 40 cents, due to the oil price’s steady decline.
South African’s took to Twitter to voice their happiness about the imminent petrol price decrease:
Thank you LORD! "@TransAfrica872: Reminder: SA petrol price to drop by 51c a liter tomorrow. Avoid filling up till tomorrow."
