Bags for new beginnings

In commemoration of Mandela Day, the Union of Jewish Women (UJW) in Johannesburg played fairy godmother to 250 impoverished moms and their newborn babies.

The commemoration was held at various clinics and hospitals around Johannesburg, including Alexandra Clinic, Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, Edenvale Hospital, Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, Hillbrow Clinic, Rahima Moosa Hospital and Natalspruit Hospital.

Every woman in each of those hospitals who gave birth on Mandela Day, or the night before, was presented with a baby starter pack containing a variety of baby items, by teams of UJW volunteers.

The goodies were placed inside sturdy bags which the moms will be able to use to carry their babies’ necessities around. But these are no ordinary bags – they are instead special bags made up by the UJW’s Sewing School, one of its empowerment projects operating in the inner city.

“The delighted moms were also spoiled by UJW with each one receiving an additional gift pack,” said Cindy Kree, office and projects manager of UJW.

“We thank all those who donated goodies, money and time to make this a day to remember for the new moms,” she added.
