Lord of The Dance hits SA stage

JOBURG - Lord of the Dance is set to hit South African stages soon, with Michael Flatley himself making an appearance.

It’s official, Lord of the Dance: Dangerous Games is here and will feature its creator Michael Flatley, who will only star in the first two weeks of the show’s running time, and female lead, Nikita Cassidy.

City Buzz caught up with Nikita Cassidy for a short Q&A during the build-up to the show.

Q. What has been your biggest highlight during Lord of the Dance?

A. After seven years in Lord of the Dance, I have so many highlights. From performing on TV shows such as Strictly Come Dancing and Britain’s Got Talent to dancing in front of Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace. But for me, the biggest highlight was dancing alongside Michael Flatley in the 3 Arena in Dublin this year, in front of my family. It was a very special and unforgettable moment that will stay with me forever.

Q. What will fans see this year that has never been seen before?

A. The show as a whole has been revamped. There is bigger and better staging – from lighting to our amazing video screens, together with the new costumes and choreography, both bringing a new level of magic to the show. Each dance number is so much more technical than before, and we also have dancing robots – I don’t think they’ve been seen before.

Q. What have you done before this show that has contributed to this performance in Lord of the Dance?

A. I found that my drama studies in school really helped me in interpreting and performing the lead role as Saoirse. Being a dancer isn’t just about the dance, it’s also about facial expressions and the ability to fully portray the storyline to the audience. So, my drama studies were a massive help.

Q. What are you most looking forward to in SA?

A. I have previously been to SA in 2008 when I joined the show. I remember how interesting the culture was and how friendly the South African people were. It’s great to be able to experience other cultures. I also remember the food which was amazing, so I’m looking forward to going back.
