Alex residents urged to donate blood on Mandela Day

ALEXANDRA - Alex residents are invited to help sane lives by giving of their blood on Mandela Day.

Alex residents are invited to help save lives by donating blood on Mandela Day on 17 July.

This is part of the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) and the Melrose Arch management’s appeal to all South Africans to donate their blood – a gift of life in honour of the late President Nelson Mandela’s legacy.

The day honours him through people’s philanthropy in the giving of their time to serve others. The blood bank regards the occasion as an opportunity to instil in blood donors a culture of donating, which hopefully will develop into a year-long commitment.

SANBS collects over one million units annually from regular donors at its 87 fixed donor centres and also through daily blood drives managed by 100 mobile teams.

“We are concerned by instances when the collected blood falls short of the 3 000 units required to meet the daily demand,” said the blood bank’s public relations officer, Sini Subrayen.

Alex residents interested in donating should show up at Stanlib, Melrose Arch on 17 July between 9am and 4pm.
