6 ways to do your bit on Mandela Day

JOBURG - You don’t necessarily have to be part of an organisation in order to do your part for Mandela Day – there’s a lot you can do as an individual or community.

Here are six ideas:

  1. Encourage your family and friends to clean out their closets and donate clothes to a homeless shelter, local church or the Salvation Army
  2. Your neighbourhood can collect canned food and water, as well as blankets, and donate hampers to homeless shelters or local soup kitchens
  3. Make a whole load of sandwiches and hand them out to the people on the street who need them most
  4. Gather your neighbours and clean up your local park. Pick up the litter, fix up the play areas and maybe give the place a new coat of paint
  5. Go to your local old-age home or oncology centre and read or interact with patients
  6. You can also choose to help out at a number of events happening in and around Jozi for Mandela Day. Benevolent
