5 little known facts about Nelson Mandela

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was an anti-apartheid activist, a revolutionary, a politician and went on to serve as South Africa’s President for what was perceived as the most fruitful time for the country.

More than that, he was an icon and a visionary – a legacy that will live in the hearts of the world.

We all know that he was imprisoned at Robben Island Prison for 27 years in cell number 46664, but there are some interesting little-known facts about Madiba that City Buzz thought may make for a good read.

• During the time that Mandela was held in prison he was placed on the United State’s terror watch list – he was considered a dangerous terrorist. What you may not have known was that he remained on the list until well after his time as the South African President. He was only removed from the list in 2008, at age 89.
• He attended Fort Hare Missionary College, however, he was expelled for organising a strike against the white rule of the college
• During his time locked up, the apartheid government offered to release him on six occasions, but he rejected them each time
• He has a nuclear particle named after him. Leeds University honoured him by naming a particle Mandela in 1973
• Mandela received more than 250 awards, including honorary degrees from more than 50 universities worldwide.

The man who achieved so much for himself, the country and the people he loved will remain in the memories of those who knew him and those who knew of him.
