Arrested suspects found with hijacked car and 5 firearms

MARLBORO - The Metro police arrested two suspects in Alexandra following their attempt to evade a roadblock in their vehicle.

Colonel Katlego Mogale, provincial police spokesperson, explained that the railway police had set up a stop and search roadblock in Marlboro, and when the suspects spotted it, they made a U-turn in their vehicle in an attempt to avoid it.

“The suspects fled towards Ext 7 in Alexandra, but were pursued by members of the Metro police crime prevention unit, before jumping out of the white BMW they were driving and fleeing on foot,” Mogale said.

Mogale added that upon further investigation, the BMW was discovered to have been reported as hijacked in Lenasia in January this year.

The police also recovered five unlicensed firearms, including three 9mm pistols and two R5 rifles, two blue lights, two reflector jackets, handcuffs, cable ties, ammunition for the different calibre firearms and a siren from the vehicle.

She confirmed that the suspects were charged with possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, conspiracy to commit a crime and suspected hijacking of a motor vehicle, and added that there was a possibility of linking the suspects to other crimes committed in the Alexandra cluster.
