Join Alex’s big clean-up on Mandela Day

ALEXANDRA - A clean-up blitz on Vincent Tshabalala Road (formerly London Road) on 17 and 18 July will rid Alexandra of the lime and grime that now characterises this road.

A clean-up blitz as part of Mandela Day on Vincent Tshabalala Road (formerly London Road) on 17 and 18 July will rid Alexandra of the grime that now characterises this area.

The Greater Alexandra Chamber of Commerce (Galxcoc), in collaboration with Brace, Adreach Foundation, Brand SA and the Mandela Foundation, have set aside two days in which to deal with the filth in this section of the township.

“We’re hosting the London Road and Jukskei River clean-up project on the two days as part of our wider green economy and sustainable job creation concept for Alexandra,” said Galxcoc’s Lerato Moemise.

“The plan is to have a Blitz Clean Up Day of Vincent Tshabala Road and the Jukskei River under the banner of #GreeningAlex.”

The iconic township of Alexandra has been an area of presidential focus since 2001 as part of government’s initiative to address issues of underdevelopment in severely impoverished areas, or Presidential Poverty Nodes, in South Africa.

Some of the identified challenges hampering private sector investment and involvement are:

  • Infrastructure deficiency – main road networks damaged by lack of maintenance, especially Vincent Tshabalala Road
  • Environmental degradation – pollution of the river network, main roads, environment.

“With these challenges in mind, Galxcoc is inviting various stakeholders such as public and private sector companies to work together on addressing the current challenges that are impeding private sector investment in the area, and as well as being part of the redevelopment of Alexandra,” Moemise said.

The key areas of focus to be addressed include but are not limited to:

  • Planting of trees and creating landscape features along the road
  • Creating a sustainable cleaning programme for the road as well as the Jukskei River
  • Creating a conducive trading point for informal traders along Vincent Tshabalala Road
  • Repairing damaged road networks
  • Creating a waste buy-back centre
  • Adopting schools along Vincent Tshabalala Road.

“Let’s pay tribute to an iconic man [Mandela] and give our 67 minutes to cleaning and greening Vincent Tshabalala Road and the Jukskei River to create a green and sustainable environment,” Moemise said.
