City explores American way to stop load shedding

ALEXANDRA - The city council is looking to adopt an American city's power generating source to resolve its shortage of electricity supply to households, commerce and industry.

The City of Johannesburg is looking to adopt technology used by an American city to generate power to help alleviate the electricity crisis in the metropolis.

This follows a visit by Mayor Parks Tau and other City officials to Oregon, Portland, to study and assess the feasibility of that city’s power generation through in-pipe hydropower systems.

Tau said the City would explore harnessing energy from water flowing through the citywide pipe system using in-pipe turbines to mitigate load shedding.

Tau was accompanied on the visit by MMC for Environment, Infrastructure and Service Delivery, Matshidiso Mfikoe; Joburg Water managing director, Lungile Dhlamini; and City Power managing director, Sicelo Xulu.
