Youth spearhead community involvement in anti-crime campaign

ALEXANDRA - Crime and violence in Alex have compelled a company of youths to seeks ways to involve communities in eradicating them.

A non-profit organisation established by two Alex youths will involve the township community in the fight against crime and violence.

The organisation, Molo Fish, is the brainchild of Alex-born Tebogo Majombozi and Sipho Mcunu and will involve holding anti-crime initiatives. It was established from their desire to improve the image of the township which, they said, currently epitomised everything that had gone wrong in society from rape, murder, domestic violence, social decay and the poor performance of schools.

Majombozi said these problems derived from residents sidelining themselves from matters central to their lives.

“The community needs to take a lead against crime, and our starting point will be a campaign called Joint Action Against Crime,” he said.

It will focus on all crime which cripples and tarnishes the image of Alex which, he said, should be the pride of the nation as the township had produced many iconic national leaders such as former presidents Nelson Mandela and Kgalema Motlante, and musicians Hugh Masekela and Caiphus Semenya.

He said the township also produced engineers, scientists and other notable professionals who continued to make immense contributions to the nation. “The scourge of crime tarnishes their contribution and needs to be tackled through public participation,” said Majombozi.

He said the campaign would include anti-crime messaging on billboards. “Some of the messages will be on anti-domestic -abuse, -rape, -drug and substance abuse and the importance of reporting crime to the police.

They will also educate the public on criminal procedure and operation of the police, courts and other safety and security agencies.

Taverns would also be asked to take part as some crimes were committed by their patrons after consuming alcohol.

Majombozi said to maximise its impact, the campaign would be a partnership for all role players including councillors, religious groups, the police and civil society.
