Vodacom empowers pupils with free educational content

ALEXANDRA - Pupils in Alexandra's high schools will be among the beneficiaries of the Vodacom education portal called Vodacom e-school launched at Boitumelong Secondary School in Thembisa.

Pupils in Alexandra’s high schools will be among the beneficiaries of the Vodacom education portal called Vodacom e-school which was launched at Boitumelong Secondary School in Tembisa.

The e-school serves as a learning platform with internet access to educational content for high school pupils in Grade 8 to 12. Through the platform, pupils who are Vodacom subscribers will be able to access classroom content, which is curriculum aligned on their mobile device across all major subjects for free, as Vodacom has zero-rated browsing on the site for its customers.

Vodacom chief officer for corporate affairs, Maya Makanjee said: “The project is in line with Vodacom’s ongoing drive to help provide ICT [(information and communications technology] tools and internet connectivity to communities that do not have access to improve the standard of education, and thereby uplift pupils and the quality of education.”

The project is in partnership with the Department of Basic Education, and its goal is to ensure that pupils throughout the country have access to some basic tools to help enhance their learning outside of the classroom.

All users need do is visit www.vodacom.co.za/e-school from their cellphone, tablet or laptop to register. Thereafter, they will enjoy unlimited access to educational content. For those who are not customers of Vodacom, data charges will be incurred for logging on to the site.

Makanjee noted that most pupils have access to cellphones, laptops and tablets in one way or another, but may not have adequate data. Having free access to the educational content portal will now help remove the barriers to e-learning, she said
