Company offers free computer training to Alex women and girls

ALEXANDRA - An information and technology company's commitment to education and digital skills development of communities is bearing fruit.

An information and technology company’s commitment to education and digital skills development of communities is bearing fruit.

The company Intel, has in the past 15 years provided computer skills to 2.2 million people through the15 computer clubs it sponsors nationally, including the Alexandra Development Centre.

The company recently launched a new information technology skills programme, She Will Be A Power For Change, at the centre. The company’s general manager for Europe, Middle East and Africa, Christian Morales said the programme was in partnership with the government’s empowerment of women initiative.

“[The programme] focuses on equalising disparities between men and women by giving girls and women from poor backgrounds skills to participate in the national and global economy which is mostly driven by digital skills,” said Morales.

“Most times, women and the poor, in general, can’t access these skills because they are expensive to acquire. We provide them freely as part of our corporate social responsibility.”

The centre’s manager, Lefa Molefe commended the programme.

“The Intel programme adds to our other IT and development programmes which are accredited by sector education and training authorities,” said Molefe.

Morales added that 200 women and girls who reside in Alex would attend the month-long programme.
