Scholars wanted for scholarships

JOBURG - The Student Sponsorship Programme (SSP) is looking for exceptional but disadvantaged candidates to take up scholarships the programme has available in some of Gauteng’s best high schools.

Candidates need to be in Grade 6 and 12 years old or younger in 2015; achieved an overall average of 70 percent or above, especially in mathematics, English and natural science; live in and around Johannesburg or Pretoria; be able to demonstrate financial need, with a household income not exceeding R16 000 per month.

If you meet these requirements, apply before 31 August for an opportunity of a lifetime.

Since 2000, SSP, a non-profit trust, has provided educational opportunities to hundreds of talented scholars from low-income families to attend the best secondary schools in Gauteng, the Eastern Cape and Western Cape.

The programme develops South Africa’s future leaders by providing academically distinguished pupils with the opportunity to excel at the country’s best resourced high schools.

One of the best examples of the work of the programme in Alexandra is vested on the achievements of a Tsutsumani Village boy, Ayanda Nyathi, who was whisked off by the programme to St Stithians College in Randburg for his secondary education. After excelling in matric and emerging as the top student of the programme last year, Nyathi is now a first-year chemical engineering student at the University of Cape Town.

You can request an application form from your librarian in public libraries or download it from SSP’s website.
