SHOCKING: Details emerge about Alex shooting

ALEXANDRA - It is confirmed there were two shootings at the Alexandra Police Station on the evening of 3 June.

UPDATE 3 June 10.36pm:

National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega and Gauteng Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Lesetja Mothiba addressed the media at Alexandra Police Station at 10.30pm on 3 June.

The South African Police Services tweeted during the press briefing that at 6pm on 3 June, a woman with two other people arrived at Alexandra Police Station to open a case of domestic violence against a constable who worked as a court orderly at the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court.

The police services said the constable concerned arrived at the station and shot dead the woman complainant as well as the two people with her and a police major.

The constable then fled the scene. As he arrived home he observed police members and fired shots. Police returned fire, fatally wounding him. 

The police said the identikit of the deceased has not yet been released and police members and those close to the deceased are receiving counselling at the scene. 

Mothiba expressed his shock and conveyed his condolences to the families and colleagues of those shot in the tragedy. 

Phiyega said there will be a thorough investigation involving the Independent Police Investigative Directorate. The investigation would be thorough so the police could learn from the incident and prevent further instances happening in the future, she said.

UPDATE 3 June 8.58pm: Shocking details have emerged about the Alex shootout that took place earlier this evening. According to a reliable anonymous source who is known to the newspaper, it is believed that at least one SAPS member has been killed in the shootout.

However, the exact details of the shooting remain unclear at this stage.

According to the source, a police constable had appeared in the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court with regards to a domestic violence incident. His police-issue firearm was allegedly confiscated.

It is alleged that earlier this evening his wife and two children arrived at the Alex police station to again complain about domestic violence.

The constable followed them to the station where he allegedly fatally shot his wife and the two children. It is reported that an officer who tried to intervene was also shot and killed.

The constable then ran back to his house. Members of the Tactical Response Unit arrived at his home where a shootout occurred and the constable was shot and killed.

INITIAL REPORT: The South African Police Service confirmed on their Twitter account that five people were killed in two separate shooting incidents.

A press briefing will be held at 9.30pm.
