Empowering Alex township’s youth

ALEXANDRA - Innocentia Mthembu is empowering the youth in underprivileged communities through videography.

Show Time is a programme that came together through the hands of Innocentia Mthembu, who has an intense love for videography and decided to share her passion with those who would not have been afforded the chance to get involved with such a high-cost activity.

She provides children from underprivileged schools and communities with free videography programme, which is sponsored by various companies, and shows the children all dimensions of making a movie.

“We teach them how to write their own scripts, how to come up with different stories and they get to tell it in their own language, which is great because in rural areas where kids are taught in their home languages, it’s a confusing transition to English and it inhibits them.”

The programme was officially launched in Alexandra at a school where Mthembu had previously shot a short film.

Mthembu especially loves working with kids and becoming part of their experiences with the cameras, in addition to witnessing the imaginative and creative stories that they come up with.

Since receiving such positive feedback, Mthembu has decided to launch Show Time’s first winter camp that will allow children from all backgrounds to take part in the programme.

What really sets this programme apart from others is that it offers kids the opportunity to learn skills about a profession that they would only be able to learn at a tertiary level.

The goal of the programme is to allow children to evolve with technology as opposed to merely taking advantage of it later on in life.
