Towards Intersections – a month of art

JOBURG – In celebration of Africa Month in May, !KAURU Contemporary Art from Africa and The Black Collectors Forum, along with The Department Of Arts And Culture, will present a month-long series of art exhibitions, events, discussions and outreach programmes.

Towards Intersections: Negotiating Subjects, Objects and Contexts is curated by Thembinkosi Goniwe and features a range of renowned artists, working in a variety of mediums, from all over Africa. Goniwe said, “Towards Intersections explores a conversation among artists, intellectuals and cultural brokers operating in Africa and its diaspora.”

These exhibitions will explore the themes of socio-political and historical shifts, cultural and aesthetic concerns, human relations, experiences, ideals and more. The artists involved come from all corners of the continent and include Kay Hassan, Mary Evans, Aida Muluneh and Ed Young, to name a few.

“The exhibition operates as a platform to promote the conversations between artists in the continent and the diaspora. The artworks selected are also a means to promote continental understanding of our heritage, as well as engender respect for our different cultural backgrounds,” !KAURU’s project director Tshepiso Mohlala said.
