Fire destroys 66 shacks inside Old Council Building

WYNBERG - A late night fire razed 66 shacks to the ground inside the Old Council Building in Wynberg, next to Alexandra, on Tuesday.

No deaths were reported, but a woman sustained burn injuries to her head and was treated by paramedics on the scene before being taken to hospital, said Emergency Management Services spokesperson Nana Radebe.

The cause of the fire, which started at around 8pm and affected more than 150 families, remains a mystery and Radebe said investigations were ongoing. It took the firefighters over an hour to fully extinguish the blaze.

This incident came a few hours after the City of Johannesburg’s Member of the Mayoral Committee for Public Safety, councillor Sello Lemao launched the Winter Safety Campaign in Alexandra’s Itlhokomeleng Old Age Home in 8th Avenue.

Lemao and his entourage descended on the home at 10am to launch the annual safety awareness event which he described as ‘a comprehensive winter safety preparedness plan’ which has been drawn up for this winter period.
