Man under hospital guard after allegedly murdering ex, leaving child for dead
ALEXANDRA - The man who allegedly hacked a 27-year-old woman to death with a panga and attempted to murder a six-year-old child is now under police guard in hospital after allegedly attempting suicide by poisoning.
The child is in a critical condition in Baragwanath Hospital.
The deceased, who is at a government mortuary, is a younger sister of the man’s estranged girlfriend. The child is the ex-girlfriend’s. It is, however, not known if the suspect is the father.
Alex police spokesperson Warrant Officer Manare Ramotshela said they were alerted by informants of the man’s whereabouts in the Helen Joseph Hospital, where he was found and charged.
Ramotshela said the incident occurred during the day of 7 May at the deceased’s 16th Avenue home.

This after the man had earlier harassed the ex-girlfriend after she dropped the child at Bovet Primary School. Ramotshela said when the mother boarded a taxi to town outside the school, the suspect got into the same vehicle. On the way, he demanded her handbag which he grabbed and searched, taking away her cellphone. He is said to have alighted from the taxi in Hillbrow.
The ex-girlfriend returned home in the afternoon to find the house locked. She used a friend’s phone to call her sister, but the call went straight to voice mail. She then called the ex-boyfriend who responded by SMS, informing her that he had killed her sister at 11am and the child at 2pm.

Not believing this, she reported the matter to the police who broke into the house to find the sister lying in a pool of blood and the seriously injured child at her side. Ramotshela said the child was rushed to hospital.
The man will appear in court once he is stable.
