Failed hijacking land suspects in cells

ALEXANDRA - Three men are in custody awaiting trial for possession of an AK47 recovered during an armed hijacking of a truck ferrying goods.

Their case was postponed to 15 May by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court to enable further investigation.

The court heard that the men, who were part of a larger group, allegedly intercepted a truck ferrying washing machines, cellphone parts, batteries and power cords from a Samsung company in Centurion.

The truck driver is said to have been stopped on Glen Austin Road in Centurion by a man dressed in a Metro police uniform. Suddenly, a BMW blocked the truck in the front, while the alleged Metro official returned to his vehicle.

Three men armed with pistols and an AK47 jumped out of the BMW and bundled the driver and his assistant into the back. One of the men drove the truck followed by the BMW. They were joined by other cars before the hijacked men were dumped as the convoy proceeded on the R101 towards Alexandra.

Police, who had been tipped off, gave chase, forcing the men to skip robots. They pursued the BMW and the truck as the other cars deviated to side routes. This forced the BMW on to a dust road in Linbro Park where one man was shot. He and two accomplices were arrested.

The BMW, which police discovered had also been hijacked, was recovered along with the AK47.

It remains unclear whether the truck and pistols were recovered.
