A man claiming to be from Alex is languishing in prison for attempted theft of a truck.

His case was heard and postponed by the Alex Magistrates’ Court to enable further investigation and witness evidence.

The court heard that the man, Ernest Nerves along with two accomplices, allegedly went to a property in Kyalami late last year with the intention to steal a Toyota Dyna 5-ton truck. Nerves who was arrested on 4 November last year, claimed to have been hired by the two and used his brother’s truck, allegedly without his authority.

At the property, two of the men allegedly entered the yard and, in an attempt to get into the truck broke the door locks and set off an alarm, prompting a security guard to investigate. He said he noticed shadows disappearing into the darkness. Armed security guards then arrived.

They quizzed Nerves who was waiting outside in ‘his’ truck who, they said, was acting suspiciously and refused to get out of the vehicle. He only did so when they threatened to shoot. He was detained.

While the guards were searching the premises, they saw Nerves’ truck drive off, presumably by the two other suspects. The security guards gave chase all the way to Diepsloot where they gave up when the truck disappeared into the settlement.
