Youth body aims to help the less fortunate

ALEXANDRA - A youth body formed early this year has ambitions of obliterating poverty from the face of Alexandra through sponsoring students with their tertiary education.

Clement Moloi, secretary of the Youth Entrepreneur Leadership Foundation (YELF), said his organisation’s aims is to groom pupils from Grade 7 to secondary school to prepare them for tertiary education.

Moloi said they aim at education as the cornerstone of ending poverty, “but it would not be proper just to focus on education without addressing the fundamental issues of poverty in the home as well”.

Besides taking the students to tertiary institutions through bursaries and sponsorships, Moloi said the foundation will also address poverty in the homes of those selected students. “We shall visit the homes of those chosen students to assess the situation at home and then map out a strategy of how we can help break the cycle of poverty.

“We’re doing this from the premise that the background of any child has a huge influence in that child’s education, hence we also want to intervene in the home as well so we can smooth the education path for the child,” Moloi said.

Foundation members are currently forking out all the assistance being rendered to pupils in schools from their pockets in the hope that one day good Samaritans will come along to alleviate the burden on their shoulders.

Members of YELF, who partnered with Malandela Mighty Heroes Football Club in its community work programme for its players as they cleaned Itlhokomeleng Old Age Home, brought about 50 beanies to handover to residents of the home to help ward off the bitter winter season that is setting in. They also bought a few tools which they hope will assist in the maintenance of the home.
