Gordon goes for honours in science competition

ALEXANDRA - Despite depressed social and economic conditions, Gordon Primary School is competing with some of the elite schools in this year’s Science Scuffle Competition.

Despite depressed social and economic conditions, Gordon Primary School is competing with some of the elite schools in this year’s Science Scuffle Competition.

The school will compete with Wendywood, Witkoppen, Buccleuch and Glenhazel primary schools at Sandringham Primary School on 14 May.

The Riverpark senior librarian Melanie Burgin said the event, which started in March and is facilitated by the City’s Library services, places schools from seven zones in the province in a test of science knowledge among Grade 6 and 7 pupils. “The students are given set books from which they have to answer set questions and draft bibliographies of information sources within an hour.”

She said five schools per zone are each represented by six pupils who compete with each other and the winning school progresses to the inter-zonal contest on 4 June to determine the ultimate champion.

Burgin commended the competition as supportive to learning especially in the sciences where the country needs to be building a huge human resource reserve for its future development challenges.
