CJC students appeal for book donations

ALEXANDRA - The 2015 Student Representative Council (SRC) of the Alex Campus of the Central Johannesburg College has hit the ground running.

The 2015 Student Representative Council of the Central Johannesburg College’s Alex campus has started a book collection drive to help local non-profit organisations improve the culture of reading by needy children in the township.

The drive is one of its commitments together with the development of a feeding scheme for poor students, petty cash collection to support their travels costs and improvement in the health and hygiene of the students’ toilets.

The council’s chairperson >Innocentia >Moloi said the book drive was a priority borne from a desire to see improvements in the quality of primary and secondary education to enable children to perform better when at college level. She said the collected books will be donated to non-profit organisations with after-school feeding schemes and other programme to help needy students study afterwards. She said they appealed for donations of any written material from novels, magazines and set books in any language from everyone including businesses, companies, organisations and individuals. She urged students who may not have returned free school set books to use this as an opportunity to return the books for other’s use.

The drive started in March and it has collected over 500 books in a target of thousands they hope to have collected by the end of April. “This is is part of youths thinking positively and saying yes to education and its importance to the country’s future,” she stressed.

Moloi hopes to see the drive become a permanent feature of the council’s function and to link it with annual national events promoting book reading and literacy. She also appeals for support from local writers to engage them on other options they could pursue to help improve the education of needy children.
