Beatenberg sweeps the Samas

JOBURG - The 21st annual South African Music Awards (Sama) was held at the Sun City Superbowl and Beatenberg came back with a bang after their lack of wins at the Metro FM Awards.

It was, as usual, an elegant affair, for which all the big names in the music industry made sure sure to be in attendance.

South African music veteran and rapper, HHP, was the host for the event and kicked off the night with a medley of songs by various artists – with a certain melodic flair that we rarely associate with the rapper.

One of the recurring themes that was seen throughout the awards ceremony was anti-xenophobia, which was preached by most of the award presenters and performing artists.

Major League DJ’d during the TV commercial breaks and kept the crowd going as they waited in anticipation.

Some of the major winners for the night were Mdu Masilela, the late Zim Ngqwana and Mandla ‘Spirit’ Mafokeng, who won the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Beatenberg cleaned up, taking home an astonishing six awards throughout the evening.

The Newcomer of the Year Award went to Cassper Nyovest, who also delivered an exciting and high-energy performance for his fans and got the crowd on their feet – well worthy of the standing ovation he received.

The highly-coveted Kia Record of the Year Award was chosen by the public and went to Kid X and K.O. for their smash hit that changed the rap game in South Africa, Caracara.

With performances by Cassper Nyovest, Prime Circle, Beatenberg and even Loyiso Bala, an enjoyable night was had by all.
