Hirsch Lyons Boys High School hosts Alex kids

ALEXANDRA - Some 30 primary school children from Alexandra were treated to a fun outing last week by pupils from Hirsch Lyons Boys High School.

ABOUT 30 primary school children from Alexandra were treated to a fun outing last week by pupils from Hirsch Lyons Boys High School.

The children, from Grade 2 upwards, regularly attend the Alex Aftercare Centre, which is run by the Union of Jewish Women (UJW) together with the Lutheran Church. The young children basked in, and thoroughly enjoyed, the one-on-one attention they received from the ‘big boys’. They also loved participating in the fun-filled afternoon on the boys high school property, where the soccer pitch, basketball court and table tennis courts saw hives of activity, said Andy Goldman, a teacher at Hirsch Lyons Boys High School, who organised the trip together with UJW.

Tables were groaning under a plethora of different art activities; and one of the beautiful results of their creative efforts was a pile of colourful spiral mobiles ready for them to take home. “They were also involved in catching and bowling competitions and the spirit and atmosphere were wonderful,” Goldman added.

“The Hirsch Lyons life orientation motto is ‘to make a difference’ and this certainly shone through on the day,” Goldman said. “It is also applicable to the UJW whose efforts are all focused on tikkun olam which means healing the world,” she added.

Goldman noted with pride the enthusiasm that characterised the Hirsch Lyons Boys, as well as the love and care they exhibited towards the children. “UJW Johannesburg and Hirsch Lyons look forward to many more opportunities to work together to make a difference and bring happiness to many.”
