A taste for toys

ALEXANDRA - The Spur Foundation has donated toys and food to various day care centres in the township.

The Spur Foundation recently donated toys and food to various daycare centres in Alexandra.

The Spur Foundation was established so that their winning recipe could also be delivered outside their restaurants, and as part of this commitment to the welfare of South African children, the Spur Foundation organises an annual toy drive for underprivileged children.

This year, one of the beneficiaries was the Pure Day Care in Alexandra. Before the handover ceremony, Spur staff took some time to entertain the children.

Ipeleng Mohlala, projects manager at Asha Trust, which is a grouping of some early childhood development centres in Alexandra for joint fundraising purposes, emphasised the importance of donor partnerships to enhance early childhood development (ECD) services in deprived communities.

“It is encouraging to work with donors who see the value of our work with home-based creches around Gauteng. Spur Foundation made this a special day for the children by providing educational toys and food packs,” Mohlala said.

“In addition, Spur Foundation’s contribution to Asha Trust’s ECD skills development programme also benefits practitioners at 10 creches in Alexandra, ensuring that preschool children have access to quality ECD in their community.”

For Ronel van Dijk, chairperson of the Spur Foundation, supporting the AshaTrust was an ideal way for the foundation to achieve its aim of uplifting and improving the lives of South African families and children.

“The number of neglected and abused children in South Africa is growing at an alarming 29 percent per year. We have an estimated 5,2 million orphans in our country. We all need to work together to alleviate the suffering of these children and provide them with brighter futures,” she said.

“The Spur Foundation is committed to playing its part, and supporting the nationwide beneficiaries of our toy drive is just one of the ways we are fulfilling our core values of generosity and ubuntu.”
