Kempton Park Substation to benefit Alex

ALEXANDRA - Alex is poised to benefit from a new R824 million power substation.

Alex is poised to benefit from a new R824 million power substation.

The substation started last year in Sebenza, Kempton Park, and is scheduled for completion in 2017. It is set to benefit Gresswold, Sandringham, Athol-Oaklands, Rosebank, Melrose, Parkhurst, Midrand and Modderfontein.

MMC for Infrastructure Services and Environment, Matshidiso Mfikoe, said the timing was crucial as it [station] will support growth in the designated supply area where current power supply can’t be increased or facilities can’t be upgraded because of the ageing infrastructure. This she said constrained developments due to the high electricity demand on the grid. On completion, the substation is expected to add an extra 1 000MVA to the utility’s current capacity.

Mfikoe added that the substation would also contribute to stimulating the much-needed economic growth of the City by taking some of the load from the Prospect Substation to the Sebenza Substation.

She also stated that the investment would help minimise power outages, stimulate the construction of another substation in the South to relieve load on existing ones, while also enabling the utility to do preventive maintenance with minimal outages.
