More amendments to the Children’s Act

JOBURG - Amendments to the Children's Act seek to strengthen regulations to ensure children are more suitably placed when fostered and adopted.

According to a statement made at a cabinet meeting on 4 March, the cabinet approved two more Children’s Act Amendment Bills for tabling in Parliament.

The Children’s Second Amendment Bill, 2015 (section 76 Bill) aims to better the social welfare system as a whole and provide more protection to children who seek placement into homes via fostering and adoption processes.

National Adoption Coalition spokesperson Pam Wilson said, “I am pro any act that will benefit children that are in need of homes and the protection of them thereof. Social workers devote their time and efforts when it comes to making this process more workable.”

Additionally, the Children’s Amendment Bill, 2015 (section 75 Bill) addresses the definition of ‘sexual offence’ and aligns it to the Criminal Law (sexual offences and related matters) Amendment Act No 32 of 2007 that will allow for children who are convicted of sexual offences to appeal before their names are included in the national register.
