Ready, set, sew

JOBURG - Elize Raath, complex head of Thembalami Care Centre, and colleague Pertunia Shabalala prepare to snip, stitch and sew at the Great Sewing Marathon on 16 May.

Elize Raath, complex head of Thembalami Care Centre, and colleague Pertunia Shabalala, prepare to snip, stitch and sew at the Great Sewing Marathon on 16 May.

“If you have a sewing machine and some time to spare, the Rand Aid Association-run care centre in Lombardy East challenges you to join them as they attempt to sew 1 000 single bed sheets and 1 000 pillow cases in one day,” Raath said in her appeal for Alex sewing enthusiasts to join them.

The care centre has received donations of condemned linen from various hotel groups. The linen has either a tear or mark on it, but is still perfectly serviceable. However, most are for double beds while the care centre has only single beds.

Sewers are thus invited to come for a morning of fun and fellowship as the pre-cut linen is hemmed to size. “The sheets will be pre-cut and ready for sewing. All we need are sewing machines and willing hands, “said Raath.

Various prizes are up for grabs, and interested people can enter the marathon individually or as a group of less than five people. All the linen is white, so white cotton is needed on the day. However, if you need cotton to be provided for you, this can be arranged,” she said.

She said entrants will be given lunch and refreshments and a great vibe is expected on the day. The marathon will start at 10am at the centre. If anyone is interested in taking part, they should give Raath a call before or on 11 May, for catering purposes, and also specify if you have any special dietary requirements.
