The city is inviting informal traders who sell kotas, or bunny chows, to Orlando Stadium in Soweto today, 5 March, for a briefing on a Kota Fortification Competition.

The competition is Mayor Parks Tau’s flagship initiative for the Go Jozi Healthy Lifestyle Programme to improve life expectancy by curbing lifestyle diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, cancer and other communicable and non-communicable diseases.

The kota, a popular fast food brand at spaza shops, schools and on the streets has questionable health value because of some of its ingredients. The competition seeks to involve the traders in making this product healthier so that is can contribute to the mayor’s healthy lifestyle programme.

Nomsa Nkosi, a competition supervisor, expects 150 informal traders to attend for the briefing on logistics for the competition, including the design, plan and preparation of a healthy and fortified product. Judging will focus on creativity, presentation, nutritional balance and the taste of the product. The winner will be announced on 11 July.
