A Pretoria man has been remanded in custody for a fraud case involving about a million rands worth of information technology equipment from a company allegedly in the name of government.

He appeared before Magistrate Rennier Boshoff at the Alexandra Magistrates Court and was remanded to enable further investigations.

The man allegedly submitted a fake purchase order purportedly on behalf of a government department after claiming his company had won a tender to supply the department with information technology equipment. He allegedly asked for a quotation to which he submitted the order with an understanding that government would process payment later. He then collected the equipment which included 75 iPads and 75 mini tablets in early January, 23 mini tablets at the end of January, and 59 more iPads and 22 mini tablets in mid February.

He was arrested later in February in a sting operation which involved him receiving empty boxes when trying to collect another order.

An official from the department disproved the claim of a tender for the purchases.
