Alex artists and allied entities will soon have a platform to support each other and promote their trade.

This emerged from a creative indaba convened by non-profit organisations Olivetree Theatre and Creative Minds, where a decision was made to form structures to assist artists to grow and to access mainstream work.

The objectives are to assist artists access local and international opportunities, to share experiences, create partnerships, develop their entrepreneurial thinking and protect them from exploitation. The platform will be for all art forms – musicians, DJs, painters, sculptors ceramicists, and performing and visual artists.

The meeting also drew inspiration from speakers who urged artists to pursue the interest of growing and sustaining the sector. Mxolisi Mngomezulu of the Greater Alex Chamber of Commerce advised artists on business operations, and Peter Sibeko of G Major Productions gave insights on trends in the sector. Mpho Molepo of the Department of Arts and Culture advised on support available from the department.

Sakhile Shabangu and Levy Ledwaba of Creative Minds said the indaba was part of their organisation’s contribution to the area’s development through arts and culture.

An interim Alex Cultural and Creative Industry Committee was chosen at the meeting, which will arrange for an elective conference to be held in mid-March where a permanent structure will be established. On the committee are Joy Moyo of Olivetree Theatre, Sakhile Shabangu of Creative Minds, and poets Lindokuhle Manda, Nqobile Mazibuko and Mantala Nkoantse.
