Metro police spokesperson chief superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the number of drunk drivers is too high. He stated, “It is alarming that many motorists still continue to drive on our roads while drunk, we observed this at roadblocks around the city over one weekend.”
Minnaar added that, along with the 24 arrested in Midrand, there were 18 arrests in Rosebank and Sandton, Roodeport had 31 arrests, Soweto 33, Alexandra 19, Joburg CBD 40, and Turfontein and Rosettenville had 10 arrests.
The drivers were released on R1 500 bail each and will appear in different courts as soon as blood sample results are available.
Do you think bail of R1 500 is enough to discourage drivers who drive under the influence of alcohol? Share your views in the comments section below.
