Thieving bank official awaits sentencing

ALEXANDRA - A teller at a Midrand branch of a leading bank has been found guilty for fraud and awaits sentencing by the Alexandra magistrate’s court.

A woman teller at a Midrand branch of a leading bank has been found guilty of fraud and is awaiting sentencing by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court.

She pleaded guilty and was granted bail.

The woman has been dismissed by the bank and appeared before Magistrate Reneir Boshoff who found her guilty of misappropriating R150 000 from a client’s account. This after she had processed a cheque deposit into the client’s account.

The court found her guilty after the bank’s forensic unit confirmed that she had made several transfers from the client’s account into her mother-in-law’s account.

In mitigation, the fraudster said she committed the offence as she was experiencing financial difficulties.

Sentencing has been postponed to 17 March to enable the bank to explore ways of recouping the money.
