UPDATE: Soweto looting spreads to Alex

ALEXANDRA - The looting mayhem of foreign owned shops in Soweto that has been going for the past week has now spread to Alexandra.

Update: 27 January 2015, 10am – We have received reports that the situation is tense in Alexandra.

Update: 26 January 2015, 11.50amThe shop that is said to have been looted and burnt in Alexandra was in fact not as badly damaged as previously thought.

According to an Alex News journalist on the scene, Leseho Manala, the looters broke into the shop earlier this morning. On entering the shop, the owner of the store, who was asleep inside the store at the time, called police. The looters then ran away, without taking anything.

Emergency services were also called to the scene to deal with the so-called fire, but have confirmed that there was no fire.

This is a developing story. More information will follow as it becomes available.

Initial report: 26 January 2015, 10am – The looting mayhem of foreign-owned shops in Soweto that has been taking place over the past week has now spread to Alexandra.

According to news reports from Eyewitness News, it is understood that looters broke into a foreign-owned shop in Alex and looted the store. It is not clear whether it was the same shop which was later set alight.

No arrests were or injuries were reported in the Alex incident, but it is understood a large contingent of police have been deployed in the township prevent more looting.

Alexandra was the scene of the most horrific killings and attacks on foreigners in 2008 which spread like wildfire to other areas in the country.
