Five car pile-up after worker allegedly jumps out of construction vehicle

ALEXANDRA - A construction worker allegedly lost control of his vehicle and jumped out of it, which resulted in an accident with four other cars at the intersection of Alfred Nzo Street and 11th Avenue in Alexandra on the afternoon of 24 January.

Eye-witnesses said there was a loud crash and when they went to see what had happened, they discovered that a construction vehicle, with no driver, had crashed into four other cars at the intersection.

Onlookers alleged that the construction worker lost control of the construction vehicle on 8th Avenue and jumped out of the vehicle.

Witness Dan Malebjoa said, “I was standing at the gate and I heard a noise. We looked up and we saw a construction vehicle hit my friend’s car as it rolled down the street.”

Journalist Anna Kamolane was at the scene about an hour after the incident at around 5pm and said that officials from the Johannesburg Roads Agency, Alexandra police, City of Joburg Emergency Services and Metro police were attending to the scene.

Kamolane said many community members had flocked to the intersection to investigate what had happened.

She said that it seemed the construction worker who had jumped out of the vehicle had sustained injuries and was being treated at the scene, before he was transported to the hospital, however it did not seem that the other motorists involved in the accident had sustained injuries.

Audit manager for the roads agency Mpho Motaung was off duty but saw the scene and stopped to assist. She tried to help to get the appropriate forms filled out in order for the construction worker to receive medical treatment at Linksfield Hospital. The driver is stable.

Driver Patrick Ndlovu, who was involved in the accident, was distraught as he said his car was severely damaged and he did not have the funds to repair it.
