Nedbank Cup lives up to David versus Goliath expectations

JOBURG - The draw for the Nedbank Cup 2015 edition held at SuperSport’s Studio 6 lived up to expectations of being the ‘David versus Goliath’ football cup spectacle.

The draw for the Nedbank Cup 2015 edition lived up to expectations of being the David versus Goliath football cup spectacle.

The cup pits the big boys of the Absa premiership against teams from the lower leagues of the South African Football Association (Safa) leagues such as the SAB League.

Eight clubs from the Safa leagues will be competing again in this year’s cup. The most interesting of the clashes will be that of Orlando Pirates against East London side, Tornado Football Club. The team is coached by former Pirates striker of the early 90s, Jerry ‘Legs of Thunder’ Skhosana.

“We will take the game to them and hope for a positive result from our encounter,” said Skhosana.

High-riding Kaizer Chiefs who are unbeaten in 18 games in the Absa Premiership will take on the winners of the decider between Africa All Stars and Edu Sports. Chiefs do not have a good record when it comes to small teams. They were stunned two seasons ago in one of the biggest upsets in the cup by the relatively unknown Baroka from Limpopo.

But Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter is not about to have any of that. “We hope to pick up in the Nedbank Cup from where we left off in the premiership and continue our winning ways,” he said.

Mamelodi Sundowns was handed Thanda Royal Zulu of the National First Division. Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane was optimistic about the Brazilians’ chances. “We will want to do the job on the day,” was all Mosimane could say.
