Can KwaBhekilanga keep its top-dog status?

ALEXANDRA - All eyes are on KwaBhekilanga High School as the community of Alexandra awaits to see whether the school can maintain its top achiever status for a second year running.

All eyes are on KwaBhekilanga High School as the community of Alexandra waits to see whether the school can maintain its top achiever status for a second year running.

After years of under achievement, KwaBhekilanga surprised many in Alexandra by dethroning Realogile High School in 2013 to become the top achiever with a 97,6 percent matric pass rate, moving from third spot in 2012 with a 65 percent pass rate.

Principal Jubera Selowa attributed the school’s success to hard work, and praised both teachers and students for their commitment to teaching and learning respectively. The children committed themselves to night studying in the school and weekend sessions as well, he said. “All this contributed to their success,” Selowa said.

But all eyes are on the school to see if that achievement was nothing but a fluke. Selowa predicted early in the year that the school was on the right track to maintain its top-dog status, come the 2014 matric results.

“I am saying this because the previous class of 2013 was more than an inspiration for [the 2014] matrics and I am confident they will be able to take out a leaf from the book of success of the class of 2013,” Selowa said.

One school which broke the record was Minerva Secondary School, which held on to the top achiever status for five years in a row, before being dethroned from the crown of King Performer in 2012 by Realogile High School.

It will also be interesting to see whether Realogile returns, or if it’s going to be sixth-time come-back kid, Minerva again; or even more so, a new kid on the block coming in to claim top-dog status.

It will be intersting to see how Alex High School fares as it has seen its fair share of problems in the past with a political turf fight between the ANC and the DA, as well as unruly pupils which saw the coming on of ‘Miss Fix It’, Zoleka Lebelo as principal. The school was the second-best in Alexandra in 2013, with an 87,7 percent pass rate.

From the five high schools in Alexandra, Realogile was on the tail end in 2013 with 70,2 percent, closely followed by Minerva with 83,6 percent, while Eastbank High School had kept its middle-of-the-road status with 86,8 percent.
