One of the organisations that residents can assist is Hospice & Rehabilitation Centre, located in Alexandra.
The organisation is concerned with terminally ill and chronic patients, taking care of them during their last days. The organisation also rehabilitates patients who relapse on their medication.
Centre manager Grace Marutlulle, explained that the organisation currently is in need of volunteers who can assist with cooking, cleaning and talking to the patients at the centre.
“Volunteers can also assist with repairs around the centre, ensuring a comfortable environment for patients” she said.

Another organisation that residents can dedicate their time to is Nurturing Orphans of Aids for Humanity, also based in Alexandra.
The organisation focuses on children affected by the HIV/Aids pandemic and will have a host of activities planned including organising soccer teams for the children and organising activities with caregivers and social auxiliary services.
Goodwill Qushwana, centre manager, explained that volunteers could assist with guidance talks for the children and teaching children about night gardens.

For residents residing in Midrand, Yenzani Children’s Home is the perfect place to volunteer and assist during December.
The home caters to those who have been orphaned and those who have been removed from their homes due to an unsafe environment.
Sanne Mirk, founder of Yenzani, explained that companies and individuals often planned activities with the children during the festive season, including a visit to theatre houses and the Vaal dam.
Mirk encouraged potential volunteers to get in touch with the organisation if there is interest in volunteering or doing an activity with the children on 083 327 7757.
Closer to home is Rays of Hope, an organisation focused on skills development programmes, support groups for the elderly and assisting child-headed households.
The organisation is based in Hurlingham and they would appreciate as much as assistance as possible.
Trish Lockwood, operations manager, explained that the organisation will be making December food hampers between 23 and 24 December and asked residents to assist with putting them together or donating non-perishable food for the hampers.
