E-ticket scam leaves South African expats stranded abroad

According to News 24 an e-ticket scam allegedly headed by Kim Robbertse, an independent travel agent from Polokwane, has left hundreds of expatriates living in the United Kingdom stranded abroad for the holidays.

Victims of Robberste were duped into forking out thousands of pounds by the agent. The fraudster was believed to have offered victims fixed discounted fares on open return tickets and buyers were conned into depositing fixed amounts into her personal account before any booking were officially made.

According to reports by Weekend Argus, complaints have been filed against Robberste, however the numerous people who fell victim to the charlatan have been left unable to visit their family members in South Africa over the festive season.

Paul Swanson, a former Capetonian living in London said he paid  £4 700 ( R85 000) for tickets for his family to come to South Africa

Teunika Carstens, a former citizen of Brits in the North West told Netwerk24 she was bluffed into paying R25 000 into Robbertse’s personal account. Carstens reportedly said in a Facebook post that the incident was “heartbreaking for us and those who love us”.

Most victims only discovered last week that the pre-booked tickets were in fact invalid. When those who were targeted attempted to contact Robbertse, they were told that “she had been in a taxi accident and that she was in a coma”.

However Netwerk24 said there were no records of Robbertse in any hospital or care-center in Polokwane. She was eventually tracked down and found to be in perfect health.
