No holiday break for Pikitup; working to keep Joburg clean

JOBURG - Johannesburg residents won't have to worry about carrying 2014’s trash into the new year.

It’s business as usual for Pikitup during the upcoming holiday season.

The City of Johannesburg’s waste management services announced that all its services will be in full swing during the festive season. These included household refuse collection, recycling, bulk, daily and landfill sites services.

Operations in the city will continue on public holidays (16, 26 December 2014 and 1 January 2015) during the festive season with the exception of Christmas Day (25 December).

All street cleaning activities and garden sites services will operate as normal throughout the festive period with the exception of Christmas and New Year’s Day.

However, there will be no street cleaning and refuse collection in the inner city on New Year’s Eve (31 December 2014).

According to Pikitiup, this decision was made to ensure the safety of its workers due to potentially violent behaviour by revelers ushering in the new year.

In light of this move, street cleaning will take place in the inner city (Hillbrow and adjacent areas) only on 1 January 2015, the municipal entity said.

Speaking ahead of the festive period, MMC for Environment, Infrastructure and Services Department, Matshidiso Mfikoe urged all residents to become active participants in preserving and protecting the environment.

She encouraged the public to apply the basic principles of waste management: reduce, reuse and recycle when disposing waste.
