Fuel prices swing in motorists’ favour

JOBURG - Filling up at the pumps is set to be easier on motorists' pockets at the end of the month.

The Automobile Association of South Africa (AA) said fuel prices were expected to drop in November.

“The drop in the petrol price is currently pegged at between 40 cents and 44 cents per litre, while diesel is showing an almost 56 cents per litre reduction,” the association said.

“Illuminating paraffin is set for a drop of around 49 cents per litre.”

The association’s forecasts were based on the Central Energy Fund’s preliminary fuel price data, which indicated substantial over-recoveries in the fuel price.

The AA was commenting on the Central Energy Fund’s preliminary fuel price data, which was showing substantial over-recoveries in the fuel price.

According to the association, the rand/US dollar exchange rate had gradually strengthened in South Africa’s favour during October, and international petroleum prices had shown a substantial decline over the same period.

“As December approaches, it looks as if motorists planning to drive to holiday destinations will have a little more spending money in their budgets,” the association said.

At the beginning of October, motorists saw a mix of increases and decreases in fuel prices.

As of 1 October, the price of 93 octane petrol increased by two cents per litre and 95 octane petrol dropped by five cents per litre.

Liquefied petroleum gas spiked by 12 cents per kilogram, while both grades of diesel decreased by 13 cents per litre, and illuminating paraffin was cut by 18 cents per litre.
