Senzo burial in Durban

JOBURG - Murdered Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper and captain, Senzo Robert Meyiwa will be buried in his home town of uMlazi in Durban on 1 November.

Murdered Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper and captain, Senzo Robert Meyiwa will be buried in his hometown of uMlazi in Durban on 1 November.

Meyiwa’s family will be in Johannesburg on 28 October to identify his body and also prepare for the repatriation of his remains to Durban. Senzo was shot dead at his girlfriend Kelly Khumalo’s parents home in Spruitview, Vosloorus, on 26 October in what is believed to have been a botched armed robbery.

Pirates chairman, Dr Irvin Khoza was in Durban on 27 October to meet with Meyiwa’s family.

He was joined in his visit in uMlazi by KwaZulu-Natal Premier Senzo Mchunu, his deputy Willies Mchunu and MECs, including the secretary general of the ANC in KZN, Sihle Zikalala.

According to Pirates media officer Thandi Merafe, the provincial government of KZN is finalising plans for the funeral and it is believed Mayiwa might be given a hero’s burial.

During his visit, Khoza described Meyiwa as a son to him. “He came to Orlando Pirates in his mid-teens. It was heart-warming to see the KwaZulu-Natal leadership put aside their busy diaries to join in visiting the Meyiwa family,” he said.

Khoza said he was given strength for the trip by the support he received from the football fraternity comprising Safa, the Premier Soccer League, its clubs and sport minister Fikile Mbalula.
