ALEXANDRA - The Altrek Stadium in Eastbank, Alexandra, will host the Johannesburg Open Street Fair and Weight Loss Challenge programme to promote a healthy lifestyle.

The Altrek Stadium in Eastbank, Alexandra, will host the Johannesburg Open Street Fair and Weight Loss Challenge programme to promote a healthy lifestyle on 1 November.

The fair aims is to promote healthy eating, education and active living and is organised jointly by the City of Johannesburg and NGO Cherebn, which is an acronym for Culture, Health, Economy, Recycling, Energy, Big 11 and Nature.

The open street fair is being organised in the spirit of the Joburg 2040 strategy which seeks to tackle the risk factors associated with obesity, unhealthy diet and physical inactivity.

The fair will have activities such as 10km cycling, a 5km fun walk, aerobics, health screening (diabetes, hypertension and cancer), a kiddies corner, basketball, baseball, cricket exhibitions, five aside soccer and live entertainment.

“The event will provide an ideal opportunity to find out about the wide range of exciting programmes the City of Johannesburg and other organisations offers to the community,” said Member of the Mayoral Committee for Health and Social Development, Nonceba Molwele.

By 2040, the City of Johannesburg hopes to achieve a substantially enhanced quality of life for all and it envisages development initiatives that enable self-sustainability, improved health and life expectancy.
