Boston college gives to the community

ALEXANDRA - Final year students at Boston Media House chose to end their school period with an act of social good.

Final year students at Boston Media House chose to end their studies with an act of charity.

They partnered with Zenzeleni Primary School in a greening project to contribute to the school’s feeding programme, and to educate the younger ones in agriculture.

The group of students worked with pupils and teachers at the school garden where they planted carrots, beetroot, tomatoes, spinach and onion.

College lecturer, Claire Johnson said the event was part of the college’s charity work and driven by the students.

“They chose Alexandra for its proximity and from a desire to help children from granny and child-headed households with school feeding and food parcels for home consumption. The project will also teach them [the students] organising skills and a spirit of community,” she said.

Students Lethabo Mametja and Ziphozethu Kambule said the group was passionate about giving back to children in a sustainable way and would monitor the garden even after their graduation. The group also donated shovels, spades and rakes for the maintenance of the garden.

The school’s principal, Partick Mdange thanked the students for the support. “Its a greening initiative with educational focus on energy generation, food production and the use of small spaces to promote self reliance,” he said. “I hope the children will draw from this and develop their own gardens in the small confines of their homes.”
