Gunman to appear in court

HILLBROW - Hillbrow police managed to apprehend a man in possession of unlicensed firearm and live ammunition.

The arrest took place at the corner of Banket and Goldreigh streets while the police were on routine patrol. According to police they noticed a suspicious-looking man who kept his hand on his waist area. Hillbrow police spokesperson Sergeant Mduduzi Zondo said, “Most of the people who carry unlicensed guns usually don’t have a holster for the gun. This is why the police were suspicious and went and approached the man.”

Upon searching, the police allegedly found a 9mm(Astra) pistol hidden under the man’s trousers on the front waist area. The police also found the suspect with nine live rounds of ammunition. Zondo added, “When the police asked him about the gun, the suspect told them that it was given to him by someone else.” He added that the serial number of the gun was filed off. The 34-year-old suspect is a Soweto resident and is expected to appear in Hillbrow Magistrate’s Court soon.
