Foreign nationals hand over houses

ALEXANDRA - Three foreign nationals who acquired houses under the reconstruction and development programme illegally have been instructed to return them.

Three foreign nationals who illegally acquired houses as part of the reconstruction and development programme have been instructed to vacate them.

This was revealed by Benjamin Chisare, secretary of the Alexandra Community Police Forum. The houses were repossessed after a joint investigation involving the Joburg Development Agency, police, Metro Police and Department of Home Affairs . The foreign nationals had acquired the houses in Extension 9 using fraudulent documentation.

He said the investigations also assessed if the culprits were involved in other criminal activities. “If found to have done so, the illegally acquired items are repossessed and handed to rightful owners, shops and the retrieved houses are reallocated to those on the waiting list and with housing subsidies,” said Chisare.

Chisare stated that some illegal foreign nationals arrested for housing fraud were taken to court while others were repatriated. “We ensure their rights are preserved and not harmed in compliance with national laws and international protocols.”
